| The Wilds is the largest wildlife preserve in North America. The mission is to support wildlife preservation and conservation through education and research programs. In the early 1980's a group of conservationists, zoo directors, and civic leaders started an effort to establish a reserve that would develop ways to maintain and protect endangered species, limited resources and dwindling habitats.. In 1984, The Wilds was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization and in 1986, American Electric Power donated nearly 14 square miles of reclaimed, surface-mined land for the project. |
